It’s pretty rare these days that a new saturation plugin comes out which does something new, unique and special.  But WOW did Spectre ever get our attention!  Tune in for our tutorial showing 3 powerful examples of how to use this plugin.

This innovative plugin from Wavesfactory can create harmonics and then move them around the stereo field using panning or mid-side.  Better yet, it builds in a sneaky trick used by mix engineers for years – boosting specific frequencies before the saturator, then cutting those same frequencies after.  Spectre calls this “de-emphasis” and it’s crazy powerful for adding the harmonics from a boost with out the level increase.  It’s like ghost harmonics.

Putting Spectre through its paces with 3 processing examples, join our instructor BigJerr and learn how to fatten up a drum loop, add width and dimension to an electric bass, and add the perfect amount of color to a master.

On the drum loop you’ll see how the various saturation styles and filter types can really give the loop weight, punch, and presence.  You’re able to isolate the kick and snare from the loop and custom-tailor harmonic treatment that gets them to pop.

When used on a bass you can add mono-compatible stereo width by hard panning the harmonics while leaving the bass right up the centre.  If it’s summed to mono this doesn’t substantially affect the mid of the signal where the original bass sits so it’s a great technique to use when you want your bass to have some dimension to it while still sounding great on a PA or system with mono subs.

Coloring your master with saturation is a common technique in many genres.  When done tastefully it sounds great, but it’s best done with a lot of control.  Spectre is very surgical in this way, allowing you to affect the mid, side, stereo, left or right with each node of the EQ which drives the harmonics creation.  You can add saturation exactly where you want it.  Unlike a standard full spectrum stereo saturator, which can make your mix sound 2D if overused on the master, Spectre is multi-band and mid-side.

We hope you enjoy this Spectre video tutorial.  Happy music making!
