As you can probably imagine, sub-bass is a central sonic element in almost all modern music. Great hip hop, Latin, techno, house, and even pop songs must have sub-bass to have impact. Top-notch producers possess a keen awareness and a plethora of knowledge on creating compelling, chest-rattling sub-bass.

But, what separates a good sub-bass from a great one? There’s a lot to consider — what waveform to use, whether or not to compress, how to use distortion, what notes are too low, what notes are too high, samples vs. synthesis, and the list goes on! It’s understandably an area of music production where a lot of our students struggle.

Rather than pulling up a sub-bass preset and praying for the best, this live-stream will show you the best techniques for creating sub instruments, common mistakes to avoid, and advanced skills to make your low-end deep and exciting. How it Works

• This is a fully live-streamed session.
• On the stream there will be chat and a live Q&A period at the end of the session.
• Once you sign up, this live-stream will show in your My Live-Streams area of your dashboard.
• To access the live-stream, login at Warp Academy, go to your user dashboard (in the main menu under the hamburger item) and click My Live-Streams and then look under Upcoming Live-Streams.
• On the date of the live-stream, a streaming URL for Vimeo will be posted. You’ll also be e-mailed the access link, so keep an eye on your inbox.
• Once the live-stream is complete, you’ll get access to a recorded replay version you can watch for 60 days after to review the information.
• It takes a little bit of time to transcode the replay, so if it’s not accessible right away please check back in a few hours.
• The recording will not be available for purchase after the stream is finished, so you need to sign up in advance.
• Note: This is not an online course with lifetime access to the videos. You’ll have access to the recording for 60 days following the stream. After that the recording is no longer available. Make sure you watch the recording within 60 days.

About Your Instructor

Hey there, I’m Ian, aka DJ IBG. I love helping people achieve their musical goals, from total beginners to professionals adding to their skillset.
You might say that I’m a bit of a music madman. I’ve been obsessed with music since I was five years old. I’ve studied classical, rock, and blues guitar; I’ve played piano in a reggae band and drums in a punk band. I’ve frequented all-night classical Indian concerts. If it’s music, I’m all in.

I began producing in the analog domain with a 4-track cassette recorder. This machine allowed for only two effect returns, so I made the best mixes I could with just one compressor and one reverb. Even with such limited technology, I always loved the song production process, from tracking to mixing and mastering, and that passion continues to this day.
I worked for Ableton from 2008 to 2011, creating documentation, and this is where my understanding of digital music technology depended tremendously. I’ve since gone on to work for other companies like Novation and Future Audio Workshop. I’m also proud to say that I’ve been creating content and collaborating with Warp Academy since its founding.

Nowadays, you can find me mixing albums for artists across various genres and releasing hip hop, house, and footwork songs under the moniker DJ IBG.
